Pet Nutritional Counseling
Getting the right nutrition is essential if your pet is to be as healthy as possible. As responsible and caring owners, it is our job to make sure that we offer our adored animals’ food that meets their individual nutritional requirements to keep them active, healthy and happy.
Why is nutritional counseling important?
Our pet’s nutritional requirements change considerably during their lifetime, and it is crucial that the diet that we offer reflects the stage of life that our animal is currently at. For example:
When your pet is young, she will need a fairly high-calorie diet to help her gain weight, while the right blend of nutrients will ensure that she grows and develops properly.
When your pet is an adult, she will need to follow a calorie-controlled diet that will help her maintain a healthy weight. This is important since obesity in animals, like in humans, has been found to be a significant factor in the development of health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. By ensuring that your pet maintains a healthy weight, you can considerably reduce her risk of developing such issues. However, if you have a female and she becomes pregnant, you will need to adjust her diet accordingly so that she can successfully carry her babies and nurse them once they are born.
When your pet reaches her senior years, she will naturally start to slow down. This means that she won’t need as many calories to sustain her and in fact, eating too many could cause her to gain weight. She may also need a specific diet to address any health problems she has developed, or supplements to support her wellbeing. For example, many arthritic pets take glucosamine supplements to help alleviate the pain and stiffness they experience as part of their condition.
Choosing the right pet food
There are countless different pet foods on the market so it is understandable that you might feel a little overwhelmed by the choices before you. It is very easy to become swayed by persuasive marketing campaigns and bright packaging. However, these often mask the fact that the foods contained within the products aren’t necessarily the healthiest or most nutritious.
Our experienced nutritional counseling professionals can help you decipher the information included on product labels, see past the jargon and find the perfect food for your pet.
How do you know what nutrition my pet needs?
Our experienced and knowledgeable team identifies your pet’s nutritional needs by performing a comprehensive evaluation of her size, activity level, and current health. We will use this information to determine precisely what balance of nutrients she needs to remain at optimal health. We will then be able to advise you which type of food she needs, what her portion sizes should be and if there is an optimal time of day to feed her. We can also offer valuable advice about changing your pet onto her new diet since this should be done gradually to prevent he4r from experiencing any adverse digestive effects.
Once your pet is settled onto her new diet, we can arrange to review her to make sure that everything is going well. After this, we will recommend reviews at annual or bi-annual intervals to make sure that her current nutritional balance continues to meet her needs.
